Strawberries are often
called “the taste of spring,” because they are traditionally the first fruits
of the season to ripen. However, if you can’t seem find the perfect, most ripe
bunch at your grocery store, you can use one of these recipes to help bolster
their flavor and sweetness.
Breakfast
Layer plain or vanilla
yogurt with granola and strawberries for a yummy breakfast. Add them to
muffins, waffles and pancakes.
Grilled
strawberry dessert
For a fresh-tasting
dessert, thread strawberry halves on a skewer and grill until just heated
through. Serve with ice cream or frozen yogurt.
Cocktails
Fresh berries are a
refreshing addition to summertime drinks. If you're partial to a slushy, then
this frozen strawberry daiquiri, with a generous glug of rum, makes for the
ultimate summer party thirst quencher. Add fruit purée to gin or vodka, then
top up with soda, or have a go at making your own infused spirit with this
rhubarb & strawberry vodka.
Breakfast
cereal
Add chopped
strawberries and nuts to cooked quinoa for a tasty breakfast; add a touch of
maple syrup if you like.
Chocolate
Smoothie
Add 2–4 fresh or frozen
strawberries and a scoop of your favorite chocolate protein powder to transform
a smoothie into a decadent “chocolate-dipped strawberry” concoction.
Strawberry
Butter
Mix 1/4 cup chopped
strawberries, a stick of unsalted butter and your favorite sweetener (to taste)
to create a luxurious topping for waffles, pancakes and toast.
Fresh
and fruity salad
Throw a handful of
strawberries and almonds on leafy greens, and top with a fruity dressing. Or
substitute strawberries for tomatoes in a Capers salad made with fresh
mozzarella and basil. To intensify the flavor of strawberries, add ground
black pepper.
